How to file income tax returns in India?

  1. Gather required documents: Collect all the necessary documents, such as Form 16 (provided by your employer), bank statements, investment proofs, and any other relevant financial documents.
  2. Register on the Income Tax Department's e-Filing Portal: Visit the Income Tax Department's e-Filing Portal ( and register yourself as a taxpayer. Create an account by providing your PAN (Permanent Account Number), which will serve as your user ID.
  3. Select the appropriate ITR form: Determine the applicable Income Tax Return (ITR) form based on your income sources and eligibility. The commonly used forms are ITR-1 (Sahaj) for individuals with income up to Rs 50 lakh and ITR-2 for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUF) with income exceeding Rs 50 lakh.
  4. Fill in the ITR form: Log in to your account on the e-Filing Portal and select the relevant ITR form. Fill in the required details accurately, including your personal information, income details, deductions, and taxes paid.
  5. Verify your return: Review the filled-in details in the ITR form and ensure their accuracy. Once verified, calculate the tax payable or refundable.
  6. Validate and generate XML file: Validate the data entered in the ITR form. If there are no errors, save and generate the XML file of the ITR.
  7. Upload XML file: Go back to the e-Filing Portal and log in to your account. Select "Upload Return" and choose the relevant assessment year. Upload the generated XML file of the ITR form.
  8. Verify the return: After uploading the XML file, you will be prompted to digitally sign the ITR using an Electronic Verification Code (EVC) or Digital Signature Certificate (DSC). Choose the preferred method for verification.
  9. E-verify or send the signed ITR-V: If you choose EVC, follow the instructions to generate and enter the EVC received on your registered mobile number or email. If you choose DSC, digitally sign the ITR using the DSC. If you are unable to e-verify, download the ITR-V (Acknowledgement) form, sign it, and send it to the Centralized Processing Center (CPC) within 120 days of filing.
  10. Confirmation and processing: Once the ITR is successfully verified, you will receive a confirmation message. The Income Tax Department will process your return, and if there are no discrepancies, you will receive an intimation about the assessment.
